Skincare has been a huge and long journey for me. For those that have been friends of mine since High School, or even college, they can attest to my issues with acne. Not only did I suffer from cystic acne, I was a serious picker (I still do at times, I know...don't judge me). My skincare journey all started with Lush Cosmetics. Yes, I got into 'natural' skincare with a brand that isn't truly that natural. But regardless, it was a step in the right direction and looking back, I'm glad I took that step. But that was just ONE step out of 3 major ones.
Not only did I introduce myself to clean skincare, I also started drinking more water, and lastly, changed my diet. I went from being lactose and consuming dairy, to slowly cutting it out. It first started with removing milk out of my diet, then meat. I was a vegetarian for years, and still ate cheese and yogurt. I soon realized that my cystic acne was actually because of the yogurt. I immediately stopped eating it, and soon thereafter, found out I was allergic to wheat. I began listening to my body and removing items from my diet, that was causing my body damage internally and externally.
I saw IMMEDIATE changes. And not only did I see changes, others did as well. Everyone's body is different, but my journey has been long and tedious. I have tried so many skincare brands and items. With each season (I live in New Jersey, we have ALL seasons), my skincare changes. Therefore I'm going to share my skincare each season, with the products I'm using and why they are working. With all that said, let's get to it!
My skin has been super dry and sensitive because of the weather, so I've been trying to use gentler cleansers on my face. That's where this product comes in. It feels like I'm just washing my face with water but in the most delightful and hydrating way possible. I really like that this doesn't strip my skin, and it doesn't cause any redness or itchiness after using. I'm not so much paying attention to the age defying affects, but I'm 30 now, so bring it on!
This item should come as no surprise to those that follow me on social media. This is actually my holy grail face wash, through all the seasons. This is the mini size, but I actually have the full size, just prefer having the smaller bottle in the shower since the big one broke in the shower once and I've been scared for life. This cleanser is gentle, effective, and truly the best. I will say, this has been a little drying this past month, since my skin has been parched, but I alternate with the one mentioned above.
I'm both happy and disappointed with this product. I'm happy because I love it, and it's a gentler, more effective and less abrasive version of the St. Ives Apricot Scrub, but it's stupidly expensive. I have this in the full size, but again, prefer to just refill the small container so I don't risk the chance of breaking this. This is seriously worth every penny and I hate saying that. It's the perfect everyday exfoliant, smells amazing, and is so damn good. I use this maybe once or twice a week, depending on how dry and flaky my skin is.
This year I fell in love with a new skincare brand and for good reasoning. Lua Skincare has been a serious love of mine and a game changer. I have always suffered from dry under eyes and I think this was a huge reasoning for my eyes constantly looking like I hadn't slept. Well, that's all history now with the Lua Skincare Eye Beam Oil! Not only do I put this on my under eyes, but I spread it on my eye lids as well. If you're oily, I do NOT recommend it.
If there's one skincare item I can't live without, it's toner. I'm a serious toner snob and hoarder. I've gone through so many toners, and I definitely have my favorites. Lua Skincare has a Rose Mint one, and it's honestly the best toner I've ever used. Better than Osea in my honest opinion. Yes, I said it. I was running out of my Rose Mint one, so I ordered this one during Black Friday and although it's lovely, it's not as hydrating as the Rose Mint one. But DAMN does this one smell phenomenal. Regardless, a toner is a major step in my skincare, day and night. I spray it on my face right after the shower, or after washing my face in the morning with just water (you read that right, more on that below).
MY RIDE OR DIEEEE!!!! This serum right here is holy grail status and although I found another oil serum that competes with it, this is still one of the best products out there. SUPER underrated as well. S.W. Basics not only helped my skin, but it has proven that you don't need 4083492837 ingredients in your skincare. Skin Cleanse by Adina Grigore is a book I always recommend people read to get to know their skincare. This is my morning moisturizer and it's perfect. I put around 5-7 drops and warm it up in my hands before applying it on my face. This is what I go back to every winter. YOU NEED IT!
A new product to my collection and I HATE THAT I LOVE THIS! I got this in a Petit Vour box, and I finally tried it this winter, my freaking goodness!! I need this in a full size, as it's amazing. It's a pricey item, but a little goes a LONG way. Honestly, I've been using this for a couple weeks now, and it's a super small jar, that still has a ton of product. It's a gel consistency, and is super hydrating. Smells amazing – really sweet and delicious. I use this at night over the oil below, when I need extra hydration. Which I've been needing a lot of this winter. If you have dry skin, you need this.
Another new product to me this year, and a pretty awesome one. Although this doesn't give me as much hydration as I'd like, this helps with my redness like crazy. I know that Skin Owl drops are really loved in the indie/ cruelty-free/green community and I was happy to FINALLY get to try the products. This smells really sweet, but not in a gross or overpowering way. I have to use more oil from this product, than my S.W. Basics, usually about 7-10 drops, but it sinks really well into the skin, doesn't leave a smell, and makes my skin feel plump. I oftentimes use it with the item below.
Alongside the Maqui Berry drops, I've been using the Beauty Whip as an overnight mask. I haven't used the mask on its own, because I really like how it makes my skin feel when I use it overnight. I will say, I can't use this every night during the week, because it seems it's too much for my skin, but 2 to 3 times out of 7, I'll put this on top of the pm beauty drops, and go to sleep. The smell is weird, it smells like alcohol and sweet. Not in a bad way, just wasn't expecting that. The scent doesn't linger, and there is no residue on my pillow. Washes off easy in the morning as it just sinks into the skin. If you're looking for a hydrating mask, highly recommend.
Lastly, I want to share some honorable mentions!
S.W. Basics Cream - I have loved and used this product every winter for the past 2 years and can't speak highly enough of it. I have recommended this to everyone, I have gifted it to many. Trust me, this is a necessary item for dry skin, whether face or body. As natural as you can get as well.
Metta Skincare Balm - I actually was using this for my night time face lotion before I tried the Soapwalla one. It's a great texture, super hydrating, and sinks really well into the skin. It will leave your skin oily and beautiful. Will rebuy.
Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask - THIS MASK IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! Don't hate me please. This face mask is PERFECT for winter skin, whether it's dry, or dull...this gives it moisture AND a glow. You need it, you're welcome.
Remember that skincare is personal, and what works for me, might not work for you. Also, I have dry skin in the winter, and oily in the summer...I'm just combo due to the weather and seasons. With that said, in the morning, I do NOT wash my face, ever, I just simply use warm water in the winter, and cold water in the summer, that's it. It's a tip I learned from the book Skin Cleanse and it changed my life. I was over washing my face, and many people do.
Another thing I want to disclaim is that you should test products one at a time, to see if you have reactions or if they work/don't work for you, before starting a whole new regime. Skincare is all about baby steps, it's a journey. I hope this post helps you on your skincare journey.
Tell me what products you have in your skincare routine, and which ones you're curious to try!
