All my life, I've been a candle addict. I'm surprised I haven't had more candle makers on here, but I think it's because I have so many candles, I have to limit myself on what I buy. Regardless, I knew I wanted Soy Much Brighter in my collection, and on Meet The Maker. First and foremost, she has the cutest Vegan Because candles, that donate 10% of each purchase to animal rescues. I got the Love one, which has a cute pig on it. One of the main reasons I went vegetarian so long ago.
I also got samples, which was a bad idea, because now I want all of those in full sizes! Katie was so helpful when it came to helping me choose the right scent, and when I told her to just send me random samples, she really nailed it. Her scents are so amazing, and smell so spot on to their description. I can't believe it took me so long to find her, but I'm glad I did.
But seriously, let me stop rambling about my candle obsession and let's get to know Katie!
If you were to be an animal in another life, what animal would you choose and why?
Definitely some type of bird. Being able to transport myself through the sky to anywhere I want at any given moment, seems like a great life to me!
How did you start getting into candle making?
A couple of years ago I was working with a software company in their customer support department. While I liked my job and the company, sitting in one position in a cubicle for the entire day was not something I wanted for myself, long-term. So, I got the idea in my head that I had to start my own business and it had to be something creative. For some reason, candles popped into my head like a light bulb. I had always been obsessed with candles and scents, so it immediately made sense for me to experiment with the idea. I used a bonus I received from work, purchased enough supplies to make 100 candles, and never looked back. I also knew I wanted to make a vegan and nontoxic product for my community. Candles are not an obvious toxin in the home, and I wanted to spread the word about the difference between a vegan, soy candle and other mainstream candles you'd find in department stores.
What has candle making taught you, that you never thought of before?
Endless Possibility. Although, my increased awareness of possibility stems from a compilation of the candle making process AND the business side of the company. Literally speaking, I've realized there are endless possibilities when it comes to creating scents and products to infuse into my business. On the business side, which I enjoy equally to candle-making, I've also realized there are endless methods of marketing, research, and connections to be made in this world.
As a maker that gives back to the animals, share how being cruelty free and vegan started?
Before moving to New England from Florida 4 years ago, I flew up to interview for a few jobs. For my flight back, my boyfriend's mom gave me a book called "Skinny Bitch" to read on the plane. The context and photo on the front of the book all make you think it's just another informational book on health. But it's WAY more than that. It's all about how animal products effect our bodies and health as well as how animals are treated in the industry. I became vegan half way through that flight, cold turkey (after ugly crying in the middle seat because of everything I had just learned).
What are some of your favorite brands, commercial and indie, that you love to support?
For skin care I use Fanciful Fox scrub/cleanser and their moisturizer. They're a woman-owned company based in Brooklyn doing great things for the animals! Another woman-owned product I like to use in the shower is the Radiant Rose Salt Scrub from Moon Body Soul. All my make-up comes from a small biz called The All Natural Face. All her products are plant-based and toxin-free.
On the commercial side for house-hold products, I use anything from Seventh Generation, the Honest Brand, and GreenWoks (which can all be found at Target!) They're all on a mission for environmental protection and the availability of better products for our homes and bodies.
If you could collaborate with another brand on a product or duo, who would it be?
Moon Body Soul. We've had a few chats about a possible collaboration, stay tuned!
Do you have an upcoming projects or thoughts on branching out with new products?
YES! I've recently had an influx of inspiration to create new things to bring on board. I'm experimenting with lotion, incense, and possibly perfume.
How do you go about deciding what charities you are going to donate to?
I usually reach out to my following on Instagram to ask for recommendations. Since their purchases are a part of the donation, I like for them to be a part of the monthly sanctuary choice. I also follow quite a few sanctuaries on social media, sometimes I'll pick from that group as well.
If you were to start a charity, who would it benefit and why?
Oh gosh. What a huge question! Right now I'm passionate about so many things. To my core, animals will always be a big focus, so I'd probably start there. Recently I've learned about P.M.U. farms and how terribly mares are treated for the sake of a hormone used in a menopause drug called Premarin. They are impregnated over and over for 12 years so pharmaceutical companies can extract that hormone from their urine that is only present while they are pregnant. So, I'd probably go even further than a charity and open up a sanctuary specifically for rescuing those mares from the P.M.U. farms - but of course all animals would be welcome. :)
How do the scents that you chose for the moon phases candle, correlate with the moon itself?
When I knew I was going to create a collection based on the phases of the moon, I did a bit of research about the best scent notes that correlate with the energy manifested from each phase. Each phase creates a new opportunity for introspection that can be enhanced with aromatherapy. For instance, the most widely known effect of the Full Moon is that it creates high or "crazy" vibes and energy. So, I went in search of a blend that would manifest a state of calm when used during the height of this energy. The blend I use is Sandalwood, Tangerine, and Patchouli.
As someone who has a moon phase candle collection, what are your full moon rituals?
Honestly, I had no rituals before creating the Moon Phase collection. After diving into the research on the phases of the moon and how immensely our moods and emotions are connected to the moon, I've realized how effective rituals can be. And of course, aromatherapy is my main recourse for combating any stress related to the Full Moon vibes. I usually resort to the Full Moon candle. I also use a roll-on Lavender essential oil for anxiety when the full moon energy is high. It doesn't seem like much of a ritual, but it works wonders for me. I'll also note that a moon phase ritual can be as complex or simple as you want it to be - it's about whatever works for you.
Have you ever had a scent that didn't really work out? Elaborate.
Yes, 2 that I can remember. A cake scent and a blueberry scent. Both were made in my first few months of candle-making and both were too sweet - to the point that you didn't even have to light the candle to smell the candle in the room. I've since learned that I want my candles to be memorable, but also subtle and not so much "in-your-face".
With that said, what have been some of your favorite scent creations?
Grapefruit Bubbly (grapefruit + mango) has been a favorite ever since I introduced it to the group. It's a scent that works for me anytime of the year and has just the right amount of citrus and sweetness. A more recent favorite is a floral scent I'm calling Flower Child (orange blossom, sandalwood and jasmine).
If someone was to do a custom scent to go with you, what would it be?
It would probably include a bit of sage and lavender. Because they're both calm-inducing and on the neutral side - which I think is a staple of both me and the business. (I think I just came up with a new blend I have to experiment with!)
If you had acquired $100K, what would you do?
Open an animal sanctuary!
Now, I already warned Katie on what I'm about to say......I think I'm in love. No seriously, Katie and I are kindred spirits. After reading this, I swear we are one in the same.
Not only is Katie eloquent, but she is so caring when it comes to the animals, and that's exactly why you should support her and her brand!
