SkinOwl is one of those brands you see a bunch of natural and green beauty bloggers using and posting about, but never really bite the bullet to try. Yes, I know you're one of those, because I was one of those. I am extremely late to the bandwagon, but have been following the brand for a while. I tend to just admire from a far, but now that I'm even more into skincare, I told myself it was time.
Not only was it time to try the brand, but to contact Annie to be a part of this series. She was more than happy to be a part of it, and when I told her I didn't know what to try, she automatically recommended the trial kit. Such a perfect recommendation and way to try all the products, before committing to a full size. Although I didn't get the trial kit, because I got the Beauty Heroes box, my friend Andrea did and she LOVES it!
What really intrigued me about the brand, Annie, and the products, was that this line was specifically created for her acne. I always say how important it is to treat your skin, the way you want it to look, so to try a brand from someone who believes that as well, is even more a reason to support the brand. Let's hear how Annie does what she does!
SkinOwl was started like most indie brands, it was to accommodate you and your skin, can you explain what makes your brand different?
I will say that, I don't know of any brand wherein a consumer on unemployment, started a skincare line. It was probably the most risky decision I've ever made. Essentially, SkinOwl was created as a result with my journey with cystic acne AND being a consumer of anti-acne products that just didn't work. I decided to take matters into my own hands and build something from the ground up. SkinOwl is a lifestyle brand, with a heavy focus on selfcare just as much as skincare. Aside from myself, the entire office team is under 30. They have their finger on the pulse of what's relevant, what's trending, and we feel this sets us apart from the average brand.
How does SkinOwl alter to all different skin types and ages?
We have products that combat every skin concern, from acne to dark marks to aging skin. Our Beauty Drop face oils, cater to very specific and individual skin concerns and the rest of our range is incredibly efficient. A 29 year old loves our eye concentrate and a 65 year old woman loves it. Whatever your concerns are, there is a product for you, that will work and keep working!
What is the product you feel the most accomplished with creating?
Our newest launch, Beauty Whip. I'm not sure I've ever been more obsessed with a product. It's chock full of Maqui Berry, which is the number one fruit antioxidant in the world. It's so multi-tasking. So smoothing and soothing, and it feels like cool greek yogurt. I keep it in the fridge for extra de-puffing and pore minimizing. You can use it as a traditional mask, keeping it on for 15-20 minutes. You can use it as an overnight mask, leaving it on while you sleep. You can also use a thin layer, as a makeup primer. It's just amazing. Try it once and watch how the skin responds. It's been incredible to see the feedback and happy faces!
Since skincare is so personal, as a brand and skincare user, how does one go about choosing and trying the right products?
We have a SkinScanner on our site, which asks a series of questions and delivers a personal regimen to whoever is in need. People email us everyday asking us for our opinion based on their skin's state. We spend a lot of time talking to our fans and making them feel comfortable with bringing new products into their regimen. We sell samples on the website which really helps!
Why do you think consumers are often scared of change, especially when it comes to skincare?
Skincare products are like your badge of honor. We cling to the things we used, especially if we've used them for awhile, and a lot of times, we are creatures of habit. Plus, if you're someone with skin issues, I think it's scary to try something new, for fear of breaking out. With so many skin sensitivities now, I understand why change is hard firsthand. No one wants to clean up the mess a less-than-good product leaves behind!
As a brand that's in the middle price market, how do you feel you compete or differentiate from more inexpensive/expensive brands?
I call SkinOwl an affordable luxury. Based on the results the products deliver, one would expect them to be super expensive. I think I always associated with expensive = efficiency, which is so often not the case. I alternate between using SkinOwl's Charcoal Beauty Bar and the Daily Face Cleanser by EveryOne that is $7.99. I get it at Whole Foods and use it to take off stubborn makeup. The cleanser far exceeds anything expensive I've tried. SkinOwl works and the price makes it easy to replenish!
What is your favorite skincare ingredient of all time?
Currently, the Maqui Berry. It's the #1 fruit antioxidant in the world. We use it in our face mask and are the first people to use it in skincare. It has single handedly changed my skin with concern to texture, tone, and hyperpigmentation. It's incredible!
Let's get more relaxed, if someone was to portray you in a movie/film/documentary, who would you choose to play you?
Liv Tyler - she's my doppleganger. And I'd have Jake Gyllenhaal be my on-camera husband. :)
What weird food combo's do you enjoy and recommend?
Mustard on everything. Pickles on everything. Hummus on everything. I love Mediterranean food and anything brine-y. I'd be very happy eating pepperoncini with a side of olives and blue cheese.
What's a song lyric you always sang wrong, and even now, years later, still continue to sing it incorrectly?
There was a song I listened to in high school, called "How Bazaar." I don't know the real lyrics, but I always said, "Cruising down the freeway in my hot cross buns." Ha! It makes me laugh right now.
If you could be convicted for any crime, what crime would you go down for doing?
Stealing animals from an animal shelter and pet store. I'd go on an animal rescue heist.
What's the last or most recent inspirational thing you've seen/read/heard?
Brene Brown anything. Her books. Her YouTube talks. I listen to her in the car weekly in some way. She is a force.
What are your most used words, and why do you think you incorporate them so much in your vocabulary?
"Absolutely" - I literally say it all the time. In agreement or instead of saying, "Yes." Sometimes I laugh at how often I say it :)
What are some of your favorite and go to snacks?
I love carrots and hummus. I love apples and almond butter. And I could eat Quest Bars, Zone Bars and Swedish fish all day, if there were no such thing as muffin tops and sugar highs.
Lastly, do aliens exist?
Hmmmm, I don't know. I'm not sure I think ET is roaming around up there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was alien life form of some kind. Microscopic bugs or some form of life. Like venus fly traps that appear to be aliens!
Well there you have it. An educational look and explanation on skincare and how SkinOwl goes about it!
Recently, SkinOwl announced they were removing their Mangosteen Beauty Drops from their line and so many people were bummed. But do not fear, when one door closes, another opens. I'm happy to have the Maqui Berry items in my life!
Have you tried anything from SkinOwl? What are your favorite products or things on your wishlist?
