If you follow me on IG, you know this these glosses from Shiro Cosmetics where the actual start of my lip swatches. I had NEVER wanted or thought to post a swatch of my lips, ever...as someone who grew up hating their lips. But I put them on and it made my lips look ridiculously good. And boy are they glossy, but not at all sticky. I love these so much and I would seriously buy them all if I had that kind of money. And this is coming from someone who doesn't wear gloss often.
I was recommended this brand time and time again, and finally took the plunge and not only contacted Caitlin, but put a purchase in. The eyeshadows are divine. I'm not a lover of loose shadows at all, but I find myself wearing these often.
My favorite part about the brand, since this is now a small review, is her collections. I mean, you look at this picture and you see Harry Potter, Nicholas Cage, and The Hunger Games all in one. If you are into all that stuff, than you'll love Caitlin.
Let's start by having you tell yourself something 10 years from now.
Aw man, I could be so much more useful if I got to go back instead of forward! :p Okay, how about this: "Hello, older me! Are you even more crotchety about your back and hips than you were 10 years ago? If so that's a real bummer, it sure was rad to be 26 huh. Drink your water and go back to kickboxing if you stopped and quit whining, ya dinosaur."
As someone who creates makeup, how often do you 1. wear makeup, 2. use your own makeup, 3. buy makeup from other brands?
I wear makeup maybe once a week if I'm busy and 3-5 times a week if I have more free time! I use my own finishing powder every single day that I wear makeup at all. I wear eye shadow maybe twice a month and usually try to integrate at least one Shiro color in those looks. I buy waaay too much makeup from other brands! Pretty good at resisting loose eye shadows since I can duplicate just about anything, but I'm a massive sucker for lip products, cream face products, nail polish, and palettes that are packaged super pretty. I probably place 2-3 orders a month for beauty-related items from other brands.
With that said, what brands do you like to buy from and support in the commercial industry?
I'm really loving Rituel De Fille for makeup right now! I also have to mention my favorite indie perfumers: Darling Clandestine, Solstice Scents, OHWTO, and Haus of Gloi. And if you haven't tried Femme Fatale's nail polish formula, you're really missing out.
What are your pet peeves in life? This could be in regards to anything.
People who are all smug and think they're better and more interesting than everyone. People not taking decent care of their pets/kids. Mixing up your/you're and their/there/they're. Split ends. When the gloss base gets on stuff in the workroom. Alternative Facts.
When creating your products, what goes through your head and what's your process?
We start with the theme, which is highly dependent on 1) what we've been loving lately and 2) whether the color palette which matches it is suitable for the season. We decide on the number of colors we want to create and whether they're all going to be one product type or split between eyes/lips/face. Then we pinpoint the inspiration for each color; we don't necessarily choose a name right away but we'll know which character (for example) the color is for. For eyes, we then make a little mock-up in Photoshop of the colors and tweak them until they're cohesive and they suit their inspiration. Then comes blending and testing and modifying as we go, until we're totally satisfied with the set and ready to take official photos!
Do you think your success has a lot to do with being suitable for nerdy and dorky girls, like myself?
Absolutely! We found a lot of success in the girl-gamer niche. When we first started out, we were the only blend of beauty + geeky interests on the market, and I think that really resonated with a lot of people who know that wearing makeup and being a nerd are not mutually exclusive!
What has been your favorite line you have done thus far? Favorite product?
We just did the Yuri On Ice collection and honestly it feels a bit like my baby. I just gave you the full rundown of how we create our collections, but honestly it's Lauren who does most of that process most of the time. The YOI set is the first one that I've created solo from start to finish in years and I adore every piece of it. As far as favorite product, my most used is definitely the Finishing [Move] Powder that I mentioned earlier! I also use White Chocolate Frog a lot. :)
With your whole brand, it seems you watch a lot of movies, tv shows and read. Please tell us your favorite film, TV show, book, and character from each.
Film: This is a REALLY hard one, I don't actually watch that many movies. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be by either Pixar or Studio Ghibli. I'll do No-Face for a favorite character!
TV show: Parks and Recreation, and I love April and Andy equally.
Book: The Name of the Wind, my favorite character is Auri with Elodin as a close second.
As someone who is still so young, when you aren't creating makeup for your customers, what do you do and like to do?
I have a lot of different crafting-based hobbies, like cosplay and soapmaking! I love spending time with my fella doing pretty much anything, but especially if it involves visiting Powell's in Portland and getting drinking chocolate. We also take our dog to the park whenever we can. When we have enough time we try to play DnD, and when we have less time we'll satisfy our gaming needs with Overwatch. I will also read fantasy novels at any opportunity.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and what would you bring with you?
I would love to visit Spain. I'd bring my man, pretty clothes, comfortable shoes, a good camera, and lots of spending money.
Tell me your top 5 favorite beverages of choice?
I won't drink anything carbonated, which really affects this list!
1) COFFEE. My go-to order is a caramel macchiato.
2) Chai tea
3) Gatorade G2 (Fruit Punch flavor)
4) Thai iced tea
One of my favorite questions, give me one of your favorite memories to date.
I grew up in an extremely rural part of Central Oregon on a big ranch. When I was very young, my paternal grandparents lived with us and I spent most of each day with my grandfather. Every morning when I woke up, the first thing I did was run with Papa to the big window which faced the Three Sisters mountains, and we'd check to see whether the elves had stolen the tops of them (on cloudy days the peaks weren't visible, and Papa told me it was elves). It was such a sweet little thing to do and it made me excited to wake up every day.
When you were a kid, what did you think you'd be when you grew up?
The first thing that I officially settled on when I was about 6 was that I wanted to be a paleontologist. I loved dinosaurs and I loved to say the word "paleontologist." Later I found out more about the profession and decided it sounded sort of boring day-to-day, but I never had any better ideas!
Let's get serious for a minute, what do you think of the world we live in now, with all the hate and bigotry?
That's sort of loaded phrasing, isn't it? :P I do think that humanity as a whole is slowly getting better. I think the level of tolerance we see today is higher than it was 20 years ago. It's disappointing that we aren't improving faster, and it's disappointing and scary that there are still so many who are hateful and bigoted and who are in positions of power. We *should* be better than this by now and it's really easy (and not unreasonable) to just be horrified by all of it, but I still tend toward optimism overall. In my daily life, I try to worry only about what I can change, but I also try to be aware enough to identify the areas where I can make a difference and contribute in any way that I can.
Finally, tell us one thing people are always shocked and surprised to find out about you.
I have a kid! He's even pretty big now, he'll be 8 when this is published. Depending on how I'm dressed and made up on any given day I tend to look about 18-20, so people who start to get to know me and then find out later that I have a kid are like "u wot".
Isn't Caitlin adorable? Her answers are exactly what I expected, from following her on social media and eyeing all her products.
If you were to request a collection come out, what would it be of?
Are you going to pick anything up?
