When it comes to getting into new brands, I often pre-judge a brand by it’s cover. I know, it’s the oldest rule in the book, but when it comes to photography and the way certain brand brand their company, I’m a sucker for it. Maybe it has to do with my background in photography and art that makes me over analyze this, but often times, it introduces me to some really amazing brands.
For example, pAra botanica is one of those very brands. Prior to her re-branding, I was introduced to the brand because of a fellow vegan blogger I won a giveaway through. Now, I had my own product to photograph, but Christy did such an amazing job with her re-packaging and product photos, I had to showcase it. It’s always amazing seeing how much work goes into a brand, which many consumers tend to not realize or forget. So this post really showcases all that Christy does with pAra botanica. Let’s get to know her!
Prior to pAra botanica, you studied and got a degree in photography, how does that help with your brand?
Oh my god, I feel like if I didn’t have my photography background, I’d be really having a tough time. It has allowed me to do pretty much all of our branding. And it also allows me to play with visual ideas and see if they work before committing, it’s a god send. I always say all that I’ve done prior to pAra makes so much sense to me now!
With pAra botanica, you don't claim this is skincare, but more so potions, why do you choose that word?
Because in the making of our line, I feel the magic of the natural world intensely and even more so when combined with an infusion of Shamanic Reiki. “Potions” gives a frame of reference taking us beyond the physical, toward emotional and soulful wellbeing.
You're extremely spiritual, how does that translate into your products?
In a perfect world, the energy of the things we surround ourselves with would be nourishing on all levels, especially what we are bathing in. For so many, the only time available for just ourselves is a few minutes at the sink or the shower. And so, it’s vital that the energy our potions are made with is coming from a heart centric and healing space. This space allows me to infuse the line with life force energy using Shamanic Reiki practices. I regularly work at maintaining a clean energetic hygiene for the line (and for those surrounding me). This energy in combination with the plant spirits amplifies healing potency.
With your practice in reiki and knowledge and studies in herbal remedies, how does that play a roll in your products?
Reiki has completely altered how I work, it slows me down which allows me to be in a more meditative state while creating batches. The slowness gives the energetic space to channel a healing vibration into the products and treat them with the respect and gratitude of a living being. My study of herbal remedies and Ayurveda is really helpful in creating the initial foundation of a formula.
A simple question, where does the name pAra botanica come from?
Sure;).. It’s Sanskrit for Guardian.
As a potion creator, what are your favorite ingredients to work with and why?
That is a hard question, I love so many. Here are a few.. Hibiscus, I’m in love with the color and it’s vibration. If I cross the path of flowering hibiscus, I often sense a deep connection to it. Cistus, because I find the scent absolutely intoxicating and centering. You can’t help but stop in your tracks and enjoy the moment of the potent perfume she offers. Rosehip Co2 and seabuckthorn oil CO2..I love unscrewing the cap on these bottles. They are so vibrant, deeply hued and effective for many skin complaints and the scent of a freshly produced bottle of either is HEAVEN.
You do events with some yoga studios in NJ and NY, why do you think it's important to incorporate your brand into a lifestyle?
Because pAra promotes a well rounded form of wellness that combines spirituality with physical care, we naturally fit into yoga culture. It’s really important to me that we are part of a healing that everyone needs right now. I guess that is becoming a lifestyle. Big shifts in how we live are happening. Most of us, if not all, need more time in nature and less in concrete jungle. We need less chemical and more herbal. So I yes, that is a lifestyle switch and I hope pAra helps people make that transition lovingly.
What does selfcare mean and entail to you?
Taking care of ourslevse is so much more than a daily utilitarian robotic act of wash, brush, sprite, repeat. In taking a conscious moment we’re constructing a new way of living more fully. It’s important for us to have a daily ritual of care just for ourselves, even if only for 3 minutes in the morning and 3 minutes in the eve. It’s those small acts, everyday that amount to something much bigger. And for me, self care entails, the pAra Daily Ritual, and some days, a mask, daily meditation, jogging/stretching, spending time making nourishing food, and reading. “It’s a matter of priorities”, my coach would say. This is a hard question, but what's your personal favorite product you have created?
If someone was to start using your products, regardless of their skin type, what are your top 3?
Outside of pAra botanica, what do you find yourself doing for fun?
Gardening, hiking, having beach picnics, attending sound bath healings (sound bath is essential for me), cooking up healthy treats, and playing with interior spaces.
What is your utmost favorite food dish ever?
Another favorite question that is not easy to answer, haha. It depends on the season, but I LOVE Indian food. My fav, maybe, channa palak.
What are your top 5 movies of all time?
Hmm...I love magical animation and ridiculous comedies..
Edward Scissorhands, Coco, Dumb and Dumber, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Nightmare Before Christmas
When you were younger, what did you envision yourself being?
A landscape architect at one point, an oceanographer at another point..
What's a perfect day to you?
Walking through gardens, then a sound healing immersion at Golden Drum, some seriously delicious vegan food with my husband, then soaking in a flower bath under the stars in Big Sur.
Now that you’ve gotten a sense of who Christy is and what pAra is all about, what are you picking up?
I’m totally inspired to be more self aware with my actions and my skincare. I never thought to think about it as a potion, and now I will!
I’ll be picking up the Chanda Tonic Mist for sure! It had me at sandalwood.
