You know when everyone is talking about a product and you feel the need to follow the hype? That's what's happening with MOTD Cosmetics! Not only does this brand really value and stay true to the cruelty free and vegan community, but Chantal really celebrates that. It's not often a cruelty free brand speaks proudly and openly about it, so I'm glad Chantal is changing the game.
The brand has grown a lot within the past year and I see more and more cruelty free and non cruelty free bloggers use them. Often people don't realize their brushes are animal hair, so to have brands like MOTD Cosmetics make it big, by not harming animals, is a huge progress in the cruelty free world.
With that type of introduction, let's chill out and get to know Chantal of MOTD Cosmetics!
If you could be anyone else for a day, who would you be and why?
I'd love to be Norvina from Anastasia Beverly Hills. Aside from the gorgeous hair colors she pulls off, she's a brainiac when it comes to cosmetics and formulas and I would love to learn what she knows. Both her and her mother have built such an amazing brand.
Compared to other high end cruelty free and vegan makeup brushes, your prices are pretty remarkable. How do you make that work?
A lot of what I put out there has to do with my personal shopping habits. I'm not one to drop $30+ on a single makeup brush, so why should I charge my customers that? My goal when I launched the brand was to develop a line that is high quality, at an affordable price, and now consumers can have the best of both worlds.
Your names are so quirky and eclectic, how did they come about and who thinks of them?
Naming the brushes with memorable descriptions, was an idea that I had while in Business school. I was inspired by an image I found off of Pinterest that had stationary pencils, with cute sayings on them. I literally had a light bulb moment knowing that there was nothing like that in the market. I come up with all the names. The first brush I named is called "Get Cheeky With It" and it was inspired by the Will Smith track Get Jiggy With It. LOL!
In the same topic, if you were to be named, what would be your clever name?
Glow Getter - My signature look has always been a pop of highlight on my cheekbones and I'm also known for going after the things I want in life.
Was there an experience in your life that prompted you to start this business?
I've been in the beauty industry for 10 years and I've had more than a handful of clients come to me needing directions on how to apply makeup. The main issue was always on the brushes and how to use them. When I was writing out my business plan while in school, I found that over 44% of women don't know which brush to pick while doing their makeup. As I pitched my idea to my colleagues, everyone loved it and I ran with it ever since.
In one sentence, explain how it feels as an indie, cruelty free and vegan makeup brush company, to be in all Anthropoligie stores?
I'm so proud of myself for pursuing my dreams, and hard work truly pays off.
Have you found your brushes work best with a specific product?
What's great about these brushes are that they're made from polyester material that mimics natural hair. So they work with all formulas. You can even go back and forth between liquid and creams on one brush, in the same session!
What are your makeup and skincare essentials?
I have my license in Aesthetics and I'm all about taking care of my skin. My essentials are; drinking water, a good facial scrub, mascara, and gloss.
If you could be famous for something, what would you want to be famous for?
I want to build a name for myself as a successful Entrepreneur who is known for launching a vegan/cruelty free brand, that is everyone's go to for high-end affordable cosmetics.
What is your favorite quote of all time, and why?
Let it be. I have it tatted on my right shoulder. It's a reminder to accept what is being served to you at the moment. To not work against what the universe has planned for you. Let it be, is like rolling with the waves, you'll be brought to shore soon.
How do you indulge or have me time?
Me time is practicing kundalini yoga. Indulging, is watching my favorite shows with my significant other.
What's the best and worst gift, you have ever gotten?
Best gift was and always is a great trip! Worst gift!? I honestly can't think of any. I'm an easy person to get a gift for I guess!
What are some of your favorite blogs and/or magazines that you like to read?
I read a lot of blogs about entrepreneurship and one of my favorites is by Patrick Bet David.
If you could change one thing about the beauty industry, what would it be?
That it is mandatory for all brands to be cruelty free. (PPPPRREEEAACCHHH)
