If you had asked me a couple years ago if I had a moon series ritual, I would have looked at you like a confused puppy. I have always had a fascination with the moon, but I was never truly sure why. That was until I stumbled upon Moon Body Soul, and other brands like it. What gravitated me towards Moon Body Soul, was exactly as the name entails....it's about the body and the soul, which all aligns with the moon.
Whenever I talk about my full, blue, pink, new moon rituals, some people look at me like I'm crazy. But companies like Moon Body Soul empower this, and the people that truly believe in it's power. If that's not a reason to support a brand and their beliefs, I don't know what it. But if you need more reasons to support Kaitee, just keep reading to get to know the amazing being behind Moon Body Soul.
Moon Body Soul, the title of the brand says it all, but what made you settle with that brand name?
The first night I ever had the idea of bringing my bath products to the world, I was discussing with my boyfriend what I wanted the company to look like and what I wanted to encompass with the brand. I told him I wanted it to be surrounding the Moon and incorporate healing of the mind, body and soul. He looked at me and said “what about Moon Body Soul?” and it stuck immediately.
As a brand that focuses on healing spiritually and emotionally, how did your journey start?
It’s rather difficult to pin point the start of a healing journey as I feel an entire lifetime is spent trying to heal our souls’ wounds, if you believe in that sort of thing. I guess you could say my journey really became my focus when I was in college in Kansas. My first year there I realized how stress was affecting my body with early onset shingles, stomach ulcers, hair loss, and even more uncomfortable stress induced ailments. My mom signed me up for a yoga membership and after my first couple of classes I realized how much breath and intentional movement could help me. Within a few short months I signed up for a yoga teaching training and began leading my own classes. After college I moved to California in search of more yoga and sunshine. It wasn't until I suffered from a freak accident slicing open my dominant hand and couldn't practice yoga, that I started to focus my energy on meditation and more restorative styles of yoga. Around that same time I became aware of a lurking thyroid condition in my body called Hashimotos. Healing my body became my top priority and I started to eliminate toxic chemicals from my diet as well as all of the products I was using.
When creating your brand, did you automatically think 'BATH', or was it a process?
I have always loved baths but I would have never guessed this path for myself. During the downtime with my hand injury, I took even more baths and they were so very healing for me! The first ever idea of Moon Body Soul was actually to be a subscription model to send bath products on the New & Full Moon, as a way to remind people to pause and care for themselves. My mom had actually made bath bombs at home in the past so I asked her to teach me the ways. It wasn't until I realized all the chemicals that typically go into a bath bomb, that I became obsessed with making the most natural products possible. It took me more than a year to formulate a bath bomb recipe without the binding chemicals. The focus shifted away from the subscription model, but we will be releasing that option very soon!
What has been the best part of creating this brand?
I feel so very fortunate to have created something with my whole heart and soul and to see it received in such an incredible way. The community of people supporting me and using my products brings so much joy to my life. I love hearing from my customers and feeling like I have made even the tiniest bit of a difference in their lives. It has been a huge creative outlet for me as well and I feel like now that it is my primary focus, I am finally living a life so true to my own values.
When coming up with new products, what are your must haves?
Inspiration is the biggest must have, and I am not sure that I can quite describe it. Products and their recipes almost come to me from thin air. I think it's really about staying open and listening to intuition more than anything.
How does Cannabis oil make a product more effective and why do you think more brands don't use it?
The Cannabis plant has been misrepresented and has had a stigma for decades for being a psychoactive drug, stoners use. In reality the plant itself is very healing and the essential oil from stream distilling, is one of the most fascinating gifts Mother Nature has given us!
When steam distilling the cannabis sativa hemp leafs into an essential oil, the intoxicating compounds like THC are actually not bioavailble. The essential oil’s major components consist of monoterpenes and some sesquiterpenes that help reduce inflammation in the body and have been shown to help with skin conditions. These monoterpenes also help products be more active as they are very small and can easily help to penetrate the cell membranes, allowing the healing oils to do their work on a cellular level.
I think the stigma of cannabis has stopped brands from using it in the past, but today we are seeing a huge explosion of brands using cannabis in this way and I think we will continue to, as more information comes to light and the stigma of cannabis being “bad” is no longer here.
Out of all your products, which one has been your favorite?
This is so very hard to pick just one! So, I will pick one from every category :) I love the High Moon Ball, it's what I use for a creative pick me up type of bath , the Blue Moon Dust is what I use when I want to indulge and feel luxurious, the Radiant Rose Scrub is what I use daily as the smell of rose alone helps to soothe my heart and soul. The Moon Body Balm will always hold a extra special place in my heart because I created it when my love was in a car accident and hurt his neck. Hearing the stories from our customers who it has helped as well, brings me so much happiness.
Prior to creating your own line, what are brands you truly loved and enjoyed supporting?
When I decided to take a more natural approach to the products I use on my body every day, I realized I had to get rid of so many, even ones that claimed to be natural I found chemical ingredients . I have since found some new ones that I enjoy including Living Libations, Fig + Yarrow, Nourish Organics and S.W. Basics to name a few.
Since the brand is heavy into spirituality, what are some of your favorite mantras?
Mantras are so incredible special to me. I change up my mantras quite a bit but here are three of my favorites I have worked with in the past, probably more than others. Also, listening to mantra music has been incredibly healing!
'Om mani padme hum'
'I trust in the divine timing of the universe.'
'I am supported.'
Your go to crystals and why you choose them over others?
I tend to favor grounding stones personally. Smokey Quartz is probably my number one go to. It is said to help with anxiety and I for sure have struggled with anxiety throughout my life. It is also very grounding and I love its crystal formations. One of the first larger crystals I purchased for myself was a Smokey Quartz wand shaped point and I have held onto it in many times of stress. Black Tourmaline and Garnet have also been super helpful for this very reason as well.
On the brighter side though, I also love Citrine as it is said to have the energy of the sun and it feels like it can make my days lighter and brighter.
Your full moon and new moon rituals consist of?
On New Moons I hold public circles in Los Angeles where I lead women through light movement, meditation, journaling, intention setting, and more. I usually set my own intentions and journal after the circle via a bath and meditation. On the Full Moon I like to find myself in water and imagine myself cleansing and letting go of anything not serving my well being. It is said the Full Moon can help you to easily illuminate these things, rather than fighting them or obsess over them, I try to journal and cleanse them away in water. I also like to set my crystals out under the Full Moon and I find time to Moon gaze during this time, just quite my mind and relic in her beauty.
Because I have been journaling every New and Full Moon for the past several years, I also enjoy flipping back through my journals at this time and remembering how far I have come and have been fascinated at how spot on my intention setting / manifesting has become!
What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years?
I am excited to see how the personal care industry will shift as the mindset of the consumer shifts. I feel like there is a huge awakening of people caring about what they are putting on and in their bodies. People are voting with their dollars every purchase they make and while I mentioned there are still some companies misleading with their natural claims, the population is becoming smarter and their voice is becoming louder. I would love to see more natural ingredients being used and more education being shared.
How different was your life 1 year ago?
One year ago I was still working full time at an office job to support myself while also working every other waking moment on Moon Body Soul. A normal working day for me was 6am - 12am and I was usually working 8 hours a day on the weekend. I felt very exhausted and knew it wasn’t sustainable, but I also didn't trust that I was supported to focus on MBS full time. A lot has shifted since then. I still feel like I work a little too much but I have let go of the “what if this happens” way of thinking and have shifted into pure trust, that I am supported and safe. I have watched MBS grow and have finally felt comfortable asking for help. I currently have an intern and am working on ways to bring on even more help for order fulfillment. I am so excited to see how this continues to grow and evolve.
Are you feeling inspired for the all the new and full moons yet to come?
There is so much to take from this Q&A and I hope it helps you in choosing the things to incorporate into your life when it comes to the spiritual side of it.
I highly suggest supporting Moon Body Soul and everything Kaitee does!
