With my Meet The Maker series, I tend to have brands that are extremely underrated in the indie, cruelty free, vegan, and even green community. With that said, when I discovered Linné Botanicals through my Beauty Heroes box last year, I knew I had to have the brand on my series. Upon looking at not only the ingredients, but the social media and even about me section of the brand, I instantly felt a connection.
It's not often a green brand is so passionate about what they do, the ingredients they use, and the knowledge they have about it all. That's not the case with Jenna of Linné Botanicals. Her background has brought her to where she is now, and it's an amazing thing to see. I can't wait to see the progress, growth, and development with not only Jenna as the owner of Linné Botanicals, but as an individual who is absolutely passionate about the works she does.
Let's get to know her!
When you started your brand, what was the one thing you wanted to make sure you incorporated in your line?
Transparency. There is such a lack of transparency in the Beauty space for both consumers and formulators. It was our mission to cut through the clutter to bring the cleanest and most effective ingredients together and to do our very best to educate and empower our customers to make thoughtful healthy choices.
In your personal collection, what is your absolute favorite product you have created thus far and why?
It may be our PURIFY face wash. It doubles as a mask and even for dry skin works well to gently remove impurities from the skin. As a New Yorker, I really look forward to coming home at the end of a long day and ‘removing the day’ off my face. It also smells so clean and fresh and leaves the skin toned and radiant.
How do you think studying herbal medicine has impacted your life, besides creating Linné Botanicals?
It has made me exponential more excited about the nutritional and medicinal capabilities of plants.
Can you explain how Carl Von Linné came to be the inspiration behind the brand name? How did you first discover him?
Carl Von Linné was renowned for all his seminal literary contributions to science but he was also an exuberant teacher at the University of Uppsala. There he went beyond the classroom to welcome non-students in and he took the whole class out into nature. We aim to follow his example and share as much as we can with our community whether they become customers or not.
Incredible mentors and teachers have guided me down a long and winding journey that ultimately culminated in the launch of this line. The name plays both homage to all these wonderfully inspiring people and to the man himself, who is known as ‘the father of modern botany’.
As a brand that is very transparent with not only your ingredients, but with how you source things, how do you think this separates you from others?
This shift towards naturals has produced a much more savvy and demanding customer. But it has also inspired a wave of greenwashing. Rather than seduce consumers with deceiving marketing we try to tell it how it is. We stand behind our product and have nothing to hide.
Although you create your own skincare, what are some clean brands you love supporting and admire?
Osmia, Uma, Tata Harper, Josh Rosenbrook, Kahina
Since you started by creating things in your own kitchen, what is one of your favorite DIY skincare tips/tricks?
Honey, yogurt and olive oil can be used to support almost any skin quick fix in a pinch. Yogurt is great as a gentle exfoliant and brightener. Honey is a wonderful humectant that can help hydrate and soothe skin and massaging it gently in the skin can promote circulation. Olive oil is great as a nourishing moisturizer from head to toe.
When it comes to sourcing your ingredients, how do you go about picking the right ones for each product?
It’s a very intensive and evolving process that requires examining the ingredients origin, extraction method, nutritional content, and any clinical studies that may be available.
With that said, what is your favorite ingredient to utilize in your products?
I love so many but I’ll mention shiso. It’s the image that’s illustrated on our boxes. Perilla is just one of my favorite plants. It tastes wonderful, smells fantastic and it’s seed oil is antimicrobial and anti inflammatory. We use it in our BALANCE face oil and SMOOTH. body balm.
For someone who is just starting off in the clean/green/non toxic world, what are the 3 items you recommend?
My desert island trio are PURIFY face wash, RENEW serum and a face oil. Sometimes my skin is in need of BALANCE and at other times REPAIR.
When you aren't working on your products, how do you wind down and relax?
I love to cook, listen to music, go on long walks, exercise outdoors, sail, swim, and snuggle. I’m also super into massage, reflexology and saunas.
What have been some of your favorite memories throughout life?
They are usually travel related. I love to explore.
Looking to the future, what are some things you hope to have accomplished in 5 years?
I hope to make our product and packaging as sustainable as possible and to improve our supply chain to become even more intimate, artisanal or in-house. I hope to be able to move back on to the land and balance a successful business with motherhood.
What have been your recent music, book, or movie obsessions?
I’m currently reading Lab Girl by Hope Jahern. I don’t get to read enough and look forward to the infrared sauna as an opportunity to do so.
Lastly, what did you want to be growing up?
I wanted to design and run an ecolodge somewhere in the rainforest.
I always appreciate and love how real, and truthful the makers I feature are, and that was no exception with Jenna.
