When I first connected with Julianna, we spoke about meeting in the city, to do a face to face interview. Unfortunately, life doesn't always go as planned, so we didn't get to actually do it, but we shall meet one day. Regardless, I'm super excited to have Julianna on this weeks Meet The Maker.
Deco Miami (linked) is well known in the vegan and cruelty free community, and with good reasoning. Her bottles are precious, but more importantly, the names of the polishes are freaking on point. Some have made mention that it comes with less polish than most brands, but she makes a point, many fail to admit.... We rarely ever finish a bottle of polish, honestly...if I could, I'd buy most of the polishes in mini sizes, if they were available.
Without further ranting, let's actually get to know this cool assssss chick!
Let's get right to it and tell us how it feels to be a 1 woman show with Deco Miami?
To be honest, I don’t think about it that much and I just kind of go week by week, but it’s really cool to look back on the last few months and see where I’ve taken Deco since officially launching last Christmas. Even more exciting is looking to the future, but I don’t want to say too much about that. ;)
With that said, how did this come to mind and then to life?
I started actively thinking about the nail polish market and what I would do if I had my own line two years ago when I was visiting a friend who had a huge collection of polish. Seeing her nail polish made me notice a few things in the packaging that I felt I could tweak and make better, and the more I thought about it the more excited I felt about designing my own line. I got to a point in the process where it was time to either take the plunge and do it or move on, and I (of course!) decided to go for it and here I am!
Prior to Deco Miami, what did you think your career would be?
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a veterinarian. This changed when I got to high school and learned that science subjects (chemistry, specifically) did not come easy to me, and my career path was subsequently derailed.
I never found another profession that I wanted to pursue after this revelation, but I was comfortable with this and was both curious and excited to find out what I’d be when I “grew up”. I was not interested in beauty products when I was in high school and only started wearing a little bit of makeup when I was a senior in high school (the 2006 Facebook photos don’t lie), so I think teenaged Jules would find it hilariously unbelievable to know what I’d become in my twenties.
What's something people never guess about you?
I’m a huge nerd. Like… not like “I like Harry Potter and watch Game of Thrones” nerd, but like… “I binge watch anime series and spent a majority of my teenaged years engaged in Harry Potter literary roleplaying.” I write my own music and can sing, but I’m too much of a perfectionist to share it. I hang out with a ton of old people on the reg (literally my grandma’s friends) and I would rather be punched in the mouth than eat a pickle.
How does a day 'off' go for you? Tell us the ways you wind down.
On my days off, when I’m in Florida, I go to the beach with a book and an iced latte. When I’m up in the DC area (where I’ve been this fall!), I love hiking on the Appalachian Trail, and there is nothing more relaxing to me, than just silently walking through the woods for an hour or two, without my phone. I’m also a huge fan of adult coloring books and painting pottery.
Speaking of winding down, what are some products/items you recommend for this?
Nothing feels nicer than doing a moisturizing mask and watching some Netflix after a busy day. Add a cup of tea and a dog on your feet, and you have the perfect evening!
As someone who values being cruelty-free and a vegan brand, how does that lifestyle apply to you?
I really really disapprove of animal testing, and I make a conscious effort to avoid products and brands that I know have ties to these practices. I try to “shop small” with my beauty, and products in general, because smaller indie brands are very transparent about this.
If you could only eat and drink one thing for the rest of your life, what would that be?
Salmon teriyaki bento boxes and coffee.
On the same note, if you could live the part of any TV or movie character, who would you play?
Bond, James Bond.
What are your thoughts on the 2017 Pantone color of the year?
“Why??” And that’s all I have to say about that.
What are your top 3 go to albums? Tell us why.
- John Mayer: No Room For Squares. Speaks to me in a different way every time I listen to it.
- Oscar Peterson: Plays Pretty. I love jazz and this album chills me out and keeps me focused at the same time.
- Fleetwood Mac: Rumours. Because I love Stevie Nicks and it’s an amazing album.
If someone was to create a polish to fit your personality, what would that polish consist of?
It would be made with the tears of a scared dog that runs away from you when you try to love it.
Kidding… it would be a mix of a powdered sugar and glitter. My friends tell me I’m hyper or something.
What are some intentions you are setting up for yourself for 2017?
I want to be more goal oriented. This past year has really been about getting on my feet and figuring out what Deco Miami is all about as a brand, and it’s time to push harder and start working backwards to figure out how to achieve my business goals for 2017. Now that that’s become clear.
Personally though, I’d like to pay closer attention to my own personal needs and learn how to prioritize them with Deco in a balanced way. The problem with working for yourself, is that you feel like you’re always on the clock and should be working. In most moments, when I’m not being doing something productive (i.e. walking my dog, Netflix, etc), I feel like I should be working and not sitting around, and I need to learn how to fit some idle time back into my everyday schedule.
Lastly, what do you want to see changed in the next year...could be in regards to anything.
Can Instagram go back to how it used to be a few months ago please? Not into the Facebook feed thing kthxbye
After getting to know Julianna through this Q&A, I'm a little confused. I love her, and feel like we can totally be best friends (I mean, we talk pretty often, so I think we are friends), BBUUUTTTT...how could you NOT like pickles? I'm starting to question this friendship so much.
Julianna was kind enough to send me 2 polishes, and I already have a manicure planned out for after the holidays. If you don't already follow me on IG, definitely do it. And while you are at it....follow Deco Miami, obviously.
