I hadn't heard of Arcane Bunny Society until I asked Chelsea of Witch Baby Soap, what brands she recommended. Once I checked out the shop, I knew I needed to make an order. immediately Sadly, because it's so well loved and admired, the store was sold out. BUT, to my luck, I got introduced right in time for a pre-order sale! Woot woot.
I automatically felt like I've been missing out for years and decided to get a bunch of different products to try out. After all, I didn't know the next time she'd make a pre-order and I wanted to follow the hype. And let me tell you, the hype is so real! Not only are these different scents and creative as hell designs and descriptions, they aren't cliche and your typical small shop items. No offense to those small shops, I still love and support, obviously.
I was so intrigued by Jenna and how her mind works, so I was excited to have her on board. Let's get to know the mastermind behind Arcane Bunny Society.
Arcane Bunny Society seems like your love child, did you ever think you would have a company like this?
No. For a very long time, I struggled with finding my niche in life. I tried to wear many more conventional hats, but nothing fit and nothing stuck. There's no designing something like this- it just has to grow! I sometimes wonder how things would be different if I had found my path 10 years ago, but ultimately I suppose that doesn't matter! I'm here now!
Upon reading your 'About Us', I discovered that your sense of humor is a huge part of the brand. Do you think people would latch on as much if it wasn't for your quirky descriptions?
I don't know! I like to think that even if the names and/or design initially grabbed someone's attention, the products themselves are what keeps them coming back. My husband is a professional graphic designer, and at first he tried to dissuade me from my chosen name because it didn't make any sense. Of course it didn't! When it came time for a logo, I said that I wanted a "ridiculous bunny occult symbol." He obviously nailed it.
Ingredients are something people often ignore in products, you are super conscious of what you use and put into your products, why is this so important to you?
I have huge texture issues. I can't stand having sticky skin or hair and I start to panic if I feel like my skin cannot breathe. An excellent example of this is sunblock. I know I need to wear it for when I need to be outside, but I LOATHE it it to the point where I need to run inside and scrub it off. Believe it or not, I am also prone to headaches from strong fragrances. I often go through 30-40 fragrances to find 1 that I will use.
How doing being cruelty free and vegan come into play with you as a maker and as a consumer?
I see absolutely no need to include animal products or ingredients tested on animals in my products. I'm not curing cancer- I'm making sugar scrub. The very idea that I need to cost lives to make bath products is preposterous.
You have a huge fan following and often sell out, how does that make you feel as a maker?
Gratitude. I'm grateful that I can be a stay-at-home-mom while supporting myself. I'm grateful that the years of research and experimentation that went into my formulas are appreciated. I'm grateful that I finally found a small corner of the earth where I can be as weird and random as I want to be and it's celebrated. I'm grateful that so many people have invited me into their lives. ️
With the market so high now with indie shops and makers, how do you manage to stay true to you and the brand?
Honestly, there's just no other way for me to be. I spend very little time on social media because I don't want to be subconsciously influenced. I am also careful about which wholesale vendors or partnerships I accept. Just being a big name does not make it a good fit for me; we need to share some major quirk quotient.
What did you want to be growing up and looking back now, do you think it would have worked out?
Hmm. At points I wanted to be a veterinarian, sculptor, artist, professor, tattoo artist, writer, and a museum exhibit designer. I never knew what I wanted to be. I envied people who picked a major in college and pursued it and then their chosen career with determination while I seemed to flounder about in confusion. I could not understand why I was never able to find where I was supposed to be and was afraid I would live that way my entire life.
Getting more casual, what's something you want to tell yourself, and look back on 10 years from now?
Don't give up and never act like a moment doesn't matter. Always put people and the opportunity to create a memory first. Protect your health at all costs.
What inspires you when it comes to your business and life in general?
Nature. Humor. Beauty. Both the simple and the profound. My daughter's freckles. Flowers. Trees. Shades of green on a spring day. I can see beauty in almost anything.
How do you make time for daily living, when having a brand with such a high demand?
I'm not sure that I do! I'm either on or off. Unfortunately, being on so much leads to burnouts that can last a couple of months. I'm really trying to change this cycle of work and burnout and take care of myself by eating better and making time to exercise. I have been letting my health fall by the wayside, and that needs to be unacceptable. Something I am trying to get better at is saying no. It makes me sad to say no and to disappointment anyone, but I have to set limits and stand by them.
I creeped your FB, and noticed you're a RuPaul's Drag Race fan.....can you explain why this show is so hyped and what I'm missing by not watching it?
It's pretty hard to explain this without just sitting you down and making you watch a few episodes! It’s lighthearted and uplifting. Sometimes you just need to immerse yourself in the trials and tribulations of drag superstars and take a break from my own severely less exciting reality.
I also noticed you feel cheated about the Gilmore Girls revival....what would have been your perfect ending and any way there will be a GG collection?
UHG. The ending THAT THEY OWED US was a Luke and Lorelei wedding with the whole town and everyone ever in the show there celebrating. Now on one hand, I can appreciate the punk rock attitude of "it's not what you want to see- it's what we want to show you" (because I do that, myself), but on the OTHER hand- that's just mean. MEAN. Regarding a collection, probably not. It's too mainstream and the nonconformist in me would never allow it. I AM, however, struggling with not making an Anne of Green Gables and/or L.M. Montgomery collection. It is something I know will fall on pretty deaf ears in general. (BUT I LOVE L.M. MONTGOMERY AND THE ANNE SERIES.)
What's something you would absolutely change with the world right now?
Gender and racial inequality. Human beings treating other human beings based off of race or gender sickens and infuriates me.
Any plans or thoughts on opening a store front?
It is not something I am pursuing, but if it fell into my lap? I don't know. While I love meeting and chatting with my customers at conventions, the realities of a traditional storefront are quite different. I'd set up a completely unusual model of "by appointment only" and then maybe I would also serve you coffee and make you listen to my strong feelings about whatever happened to be rolling around in my head at the moment. Yesterday it would have been about how severely underrated Robocop 2 was.
Lastly, tell us something people would never guess about you.
I'm pretty transparent and I would think anything I say here could be guessed! But I suppose I'll say that I was recently diagnosed with Aspergers by Tania Marshall herself- a leading researcher and authority on autism and aspergers in females. While I have suspected the diagnosis for a few years now, receiving it in the concrete leaves me with mixed emotions and I'm still working through it.
There you have it, Jenna in 15 questions! Did you ever think you'd get to know someone so well with only a couple questions? Me either, but I feel like Jenna and I have been friends for years.
Are you an active Arcane Bunny Society consumer? If so, what's your favorite item?
If not, what are you going to pick up first?
