HHEEELLLLOOOOO summer! Well, not just yet, but we are so so so close! This time last year, I was already tan and taking advantage of the amazing weather. Despite it being April showers in May, Memorial Day Weekend is upon us and I wanted to share a guide on the best ways to protect your skin from burning, irritation and bug bites.
There is a lot of really really really bad chemicals in sunscreen, and people are extremely unaware. Not only that, but because we NEED sunscreen, people ignore the hazardous ingredients, because they don't realize there are natural and cleaner alternatives. There are so many brands now that focus on cleaner sunscreen essentials, that it makes no sense to buy and use toxic items on your skin.
Your skin is your temple, and putting nasty chemicals all over it, is so bad. Growing up, my mom didn't know any better. I didn't grow up with parents that did DIY lotions and scrubs....so I grew up with the nasty brands. It's funny because I'm the one teaching my mom. With that said, I'm going to be teaching you today.
I have a whole guide for you, from your face, to your body, to your bug bites and burn!
I wanted to make sure this wasn't just a sunscreen post, because there is so much more to summer, than a suntan.
So let's get started!
The first thing I'm actually excited to try, and a lot of brands have been focused on bringing this type of product to the market, is a face sunscreen or tinted moisturizer. Now, I'm never tried anything from MyChelle but The Cruelty Free Vanity has actually spoken about the brand and the tinted moisturizer, so I knew I needed this when I saw it. It's mineral based, titanium & dioxide free, SPF 30, and is reef safe, since it's non toxic. I mean, could it get any better? Yes, yes it can. This has Kukui and Macadamia nut oils and Red Algae to reduce lines and wrinkles! This can be used on babies of 6 months or older, and it's vegan, cruelty free, gluten free and recyclable. It's a win win!
Next up, is the main essential, sunscreen! Hang Ten has been a brand I've been using since I was actually younger. I'm pretty sure my mom just randomly bought it back in the day because it was on sale. And then when I worked at Walmart back in college, I was really into the brand. Last year I featured both the sunscreen and the tanning oil, but today we are just going to talk about the sunscreen. It's amazing. It really, truly is. I'ts natural sunscreen, water resistant, it has no synthetic fragrance, and it's Oxybenzone, Paraben and Retinyl Palmitate FREE! Best part, you look at the ingredients and most of them are ORGANIC. Ohh, and a little secret from me to you, Hang Ten is owned by Coola, so just save your money and buy Hang Ten! ;-)
Pacifica is a well loved brand in my collection and it's for a reason. Vegan, cruelty free and as natural as they can possibly be. They recently just came out with an entire line of summer essentials, from suntan lotion, to face sunscreen, lip balm and the one I decided to purchase, bronzing sunscreen! Now, I get tan in the summer, super duper tan, so I love bronzing products because it really helps develop my gorgeous olive skin tone. This product is filled with coconut probiotics, and is formulated without petroleum, parabens, silicones, retinyl palmitate, phthalates and chemical UV absorbers! Don't let any of this scare you, this was created for and BY surfers, so you know you're getting a great product.
Now something many people tend to forget, until they are super desperate, is good old aloe vera. Now, I actually own an aloe vera plant, and plan on using it whenever I get a sunburn. BUT, not everyone has that capability, nor chooses to go THAT natural. So, I came prepared for this post! A lot of brands are now focused on having this item as well in their collection, so it's super easy for you to find. I picked up Sun Bum, because I've been wanting to try the brand for a while. Cool Down is the name, and it's exactly what it's going to do for you. Aloe vera, cucumber extract and vitamin E to preserve, intensify, moisturize, and restore dry and sun damaged skin! I will say, the ingredients aren't as clean as the other brands I'm featuring, so if that's something that you are weary about, skip this one and try one from one of the other brands!
Lastly, a MUST HAVE for me, bug spray. Now, I get chewed up in the summer, and as much as I love animals, I despise bugs. Just the other day I went out for a walk and got bit in 3 different spots. Last year I featured Farmaethetics, so I wanted to give love to another brand. I've tried Badger products before, but not all of them are vegan, please look at ingredients before purchasing. Badger is a well loved brand in the organic and clean green world. This bug spray is super simple, and if I owned all these essential oils, I'd make it myself. It smells SSSSOOO good, which is something that always steers me away from bug sprays. This has citronella (obviously), cedar, lemongrass, rosemary, geranium, peppermint and wintergreen! Yes, all of that together, smells amazing. I'd wear this as a perfume, I'm not kidding.
So there you have it, my summer skincare essentials! Any of these brands are great to support and buy from, and you can mix and match any of them, depending on the ingredients you like and don't like. They are all cruelty free, vegan and gluten free items.
Some other brands that you might want to check out, especially if you are looking for just Zinc sunscreens are; Raw Elements, Homemade Betty, Suntegrity, EiR, Coola, Juice Beauty, and Ursa Major, to name a few. A few tinted moisturizers or face lotions that have SPF are; Josh Rosebrook, Osea, and Coola. You can purchase a good majority of these brands through Credo Beauty*, and this weekend they are offering a free mini Coola sunscreen and Herbivore after sun spray, with a $75 purchase. Plus, any order this weekend has FREE shipping (U.S.). Or you can get it through Amazon*, if you have Prime!
So there you have it. I really hope this post was helpful in guiding you on the right products and brands to buy and support. Your skin is supper important and these brands are helping you treat them well! Don't regret it 20 years from now.
