If I'm going to be honest, I never thought I'd be able to share a Q&A with one of my favorite brands, let along the maker/owner of that brand. If you know me, you know that S.W. Basics saved my skin. I was introduced to the brand, thanks to an acquaintance and was automatically intrigued because of how minimal the ingredients were.
If my collection doesn't speak for itself (there have been 2 toners used up already, and I have a back up cream), then stay tuned for a skincare post in the near future.
Without further delay, I'd like you all to meet the lovely genius behind S.W. Basics, Adina.
Let's start this off with getting to know how you got to partner with Target? And how did that change your brand/business?
It was a really exciting opportunity, we never would have expected it to happen. It's been really fun to experience, we feel very lucky. We've had to scale a lot, we produce a lot more of our products now, our team is bigger, and we're having to figure out where we want to go from here!
With that said, where are you headed with your brand and products? Anything new coming out soon?
I have a second book coming out in early 2017, and we're working on new products now. Hopefully some of them will be out at the end of this year, but none of them are quite ready yet.
How do you come up with your products as someone who likes to DIY?
I basically DIY all of our products. In other words, I spend a lot of time experimenting with ingredients I like, mixing them together in different ways and different combinations. It's actually really hard, our Cream took me two years to perfect. The benefit of using kitchen ingredients and keeping it simple is that you don't have to be a chemist!
Did you think that your Skin Cleanse book would affect your sales, since you are giving an in depth on how to create your own skincare?
Hm, I'm not sure. That doesn't really matter to me. My ultimate goal is to get people to stop relying on nasty products full of scary chemicals. If they're doing that, I'm happy.
As someone who washes their face only with water in the morning, when did you realize this was a game changer?
Immediately. It works literally overnight--my skin was better the next morning. Nothing else is like that! To this day, if my skin is freaking out, I know I can just wash with water and it will reset itself.
You mentioned you are ESL, just like myself, can you describe how your experience with that has been?
I mostly don't notice until someone points it out to me (my sister and I both get virtually every single english cliche wrong). I constantly feel like I'm at a loss for words, and that frustrates me. Plus, people make assumptions and don't realize where I came from (because, for example, I don't have an accent). But it's been mostly okay for me, I'm lucky.
Along with being ESL, what is one language you wish you spoke?
I used to be great at Spanish, I wish I had that back fluently.
What is your favorite dish ever? And more importantly, are you a sweet or salty person?
Sweets all the way!! My favorite dish is pulled pork, which is basically sweet savory food!
What are 5 words your staff would say to describe you....feel free to ask them.
Ha I think I can guess: loud, unapologetic, talkative, self-deprecating (I just had to ask one of them this word because ESL)... and sassy.
What are your top 3 movies, songs, and books?
This is so hard for me! I'm terrible at "top" questions.
Movies are The Fountain, Newsies, and I really love The Intern even though it's so cheesy.
Songs are Modern Love by David Bowie, all old school Britney Spears, and Rise by Katy Perry. I'm a sucker for pop music.
Books are Man's Search For Meaning, Confessions of an Economic Hitman, and The Argonauts.
If you could be one character from a movie/book/TV show, who would you be and why?
I mean I wish I had a cooler answer, but I'm gonna go with Daenerys Targaryen because who doesn't want to rule the world while also trying to free everyone suffering from injustice? I wouldn't mind looking like Emilia Clarke either.
You're at the supermarket and you have $30, what do you get?
First I walk through the candy and cookie section because that's what I want to get, but I don't. Then I probably get a really large bottle of electrolyte water, a kombucha, that I don't end up drinking because I don't like it, carrots and hummus, and some type of "healthy" chips that are actually covered in fake flavoring. (And then I get mad because you can barely get any food for $30!)
Describe your perfect day.
Lots of sleep, pizza delivery, and binge watching the Good Wife.
What has been one of the memorable moments of your life?
My hubs and I went to Paris on our honeymoon and stayed in an airbnb apartment. Partly thanks to jetlag and partly thanks to stress, we couldn't sleep. We stayed up all night the whole time we were there talking about our business and how well it was doing and how worried we were about its future. It was really, really hard at the time, but it's a really memorable moment for me because I think we're different from a lot of couples. We run a business together, we've been together almost 10 years now, and we're stress junkies but we really love building something and learning and growing as individuals and as a couple. It's been an amazing experience.
Lastly, who are your favorite accounts to follow on social media?
I want to thank Adina for being a part of this series, for creating amazing products and most importantly, being a lovely human being.
S.W. Basics is having a great sale for Black Friday and Cyber Monday (20% off, plus new products have been released), don't forget to stock up while you can. Trust me, these products are game changers.
