Today I have the pleasure of featuring one of my favorite artists, Quyen Dinh of Parlor Tattoo Prints (shop linked). I know this isn't the typical Meet The Maker post, and that's because I want to venture out and continue to support the indie community with artists outside of just the beauty world.
Parlor Tattoo Prints combines 2 of my favorite things together (cult classics and tattoo art), and when I first stumbled upon her work, my shopping list was big. I've narrowed it down to 3 pieces, but my collection is definitely going to grow...it's only a matter of time.
I was stoked that Quyen was interested in being a part of the series, and hope you guys enjoy getting to know her.
Let's start this off by having you tell us how you got started with doing cult classics, as tattoo flash art.
It was really just a natural progression being a movie buff! I just paint what interests me.
When you first started, did you think you'd get this popular?
With so many pieces, which one is your favorite? Which one is the best seller?
I really can't choose a favorite. Each new piece is my favorite until the next one.
Best seller by far is Morticia and Gomez piece.
Who are your favorite artists and why?
Van Gogh, for his bold colors.
Nagel, for his clean illustrations.
Frida, for her expression of sorrow.
And Norman Collins, cuz he da man.
As someone who is artistic, what are some of your other favorite hobbies and interests?
Cinema, travel, new cuisines, fashion, photography, and surfing the interweb like there's no tomorrow.
Speaking of favorites, what is your favorite color, drink and snack of choice?
Black, Jasmine Milk Tea, and Mangos!
If you could tattoo anyone in the world, famous or not, who would that person be?
My girlfriend because she's sitting right here complaining that I never have time to tattoo her.
Since you seem to be a movie junkie, what are your top 5 favorite films?
This is going to be fun: Aliens, The Shining, The Breakfast Club, Dawn of the Dead, and Shaun of The Dead.
Okay, that wasn't fun. It was hard.
Let's copy Miss Congeniality and have you describe your perfect day.
My perfect day would include well-made pancakes, bubble tea, doggies, making art, bae, and some sort of misadventure.
What is a fond memory of your childhood you still remember and look back on?
There were many of these memories.. but I would say, camping in a trailer on an island and catching crabs with our bare hands. I'm a simple person and resent the fact that we are so engrossed with the virtual world.
If you were to change one thing about the world we live in today, what would that be?
That we can vibrate at a higher consciousness. More about love... and less about the Kardashians.
What is one thing you always struggled with growing up, and how have you overcome it?
Figuring out who I want to be and my purpose. You can overcome it by following your heart.
What is your go to album? Go to band/musician?
I love new wave and a synthie sound, so anything from Depeche Mode to Crystal Castles is the jam.
What do you think sets you apart as an artist and individual in general?
That I make a full-time living solely on creating tattoo flash.
Lastly, where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I'll probably still be living in Los Angeles, married, running a fashion brand, and still making art, of course!
I don't need to say this...but I'm going to, if you don't already own one of her pieces, you should. I recommended her shop to a ton of my friends, and even got my boyfriend to buy 2 of her pieces, and he's an artist. Which goes to show....artists always support other artists. As it should be.
Lastly, if you were to request a piece for Quyen to do, what would you request?
My request, Stranger Things, but she already knows this and has made my wishes come true! Woot woot.
