Anyone that knows me, knows that I have a serious obsession with candles. Prior to being cruelty free, and even up until last year, I used to stock up on Bath & Body Work candles. Unfortunately, all the back and for with the company, I stopped buying from them. I began my search for soy candles, among the indie world.
The Burlap Bag randomly showed up, I don't even remember how, but I immediately fell in love with the packaging, naming and scents. I gifted one of these candles to my friend Nicole, and coincidentally, one of the cruelty free bloggers she followed ALSO supported this brand. We ended up getting our other cruelty free friend into the candles as well....so hopefully all 4 of us will encourage you to try them out!
While you contemplate your purchase, get to know Lauren, the owner of The Burlap Bag.
Let's just start by having you explain the obsession you, and everyone else has, with unicorns?
Unicorns are all things happiness: rainbows, magic, sunshine, cotton candy, fantasy. No one frowns when they see a unicorn!
With that said, what is your best selling candle and how did you come up with the scent?
Ha - see the previous question! Unicorn Puke is our best seller - and it's cotton candy scented - duh!
As someone who creates candles, have you ever thought about creating perfumes with those scents? Even if just for personal use?
I have created a few perfumes for myself and would love to turn our crazy candle names into perfumes for everyone! I might get some friends to test some out for me -- put that on my never-ending to-do list. :)
What inspires you to create these scents and the names?
My husband and I just love to laugh. One can only handle seeing "vanilla lavender" so many times before you're bored to tears, so we decided to create a whole line of funny candles. Our 3 year old, Greta, I'm sure will be helpful in creating ridiculous names as she gets older.
You make custom candles, have you every loved one so much, you made an extra for yourself?
I love surprising friends with custom ones for their dogs or husband -- we just, yesterday, made a "Fletcher Walter" one for our 2nd child - he'll be joining our family in 2 more months, or whenever he's sick of being in my belly. :)
What are some of your favorite brands, commercial and indie?
Our city, Austin, has the best indie brands!! The Pink Samurai makes the best cat pins. Wild Air Co makes beauuuutiful jewelry (plus she helps us make candles!). Serious Creatures makes amazing illustrated cards (a luchador sloth?!). Curious Prints finds amazing vintage prints - my house needs all of them. Plaid Pigeon makes hilarious dinosaur succulent planters - I buy them as gifts for everyone. (shops linked)
If a scent was created to go against your personality, what would it consist of?
I love any scent I can eat - gimme all the cookie/cake/pie things. It's because I'm so sweet (bahah). I really dislike any lemon scent - because I'm rarely sour. :)
When you were younger, what was something you ate so much of, you got sick of it?
Probably something lame, like bananas. I really love all food and will eat anything!
What are your favorite 5 films of all time?
Edward Scissorhands, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Groundhog Day, The Jungle Book, You've Got Mail (that's an odd mix, I know).
On your spare time, you......?
Snuggle with my cats, eat pizza, laugh with friends as much as possible.
What has creating candles taught you?
Patience and planning ahead! You can't make candles happen in an hour. There's a lot of waiting and planning, but it's been a super fun experience.
If you could be a TV character, cartoon or fiction, who would you be?
Monica Geller. I enjoy cooking and can be particular about placement of items and cleanliness.
What are your favorite IG accounts to follow? (all linked)
Skunk Boy (I love the way she decorates and her outfits), Bunny is Foraging (great recipes from a real person!), The Pink Samurai (omg her studio and collection of cute things!), TeamSparkle (she's all things cutesy and unicorn!)
What is your favorite ice cream flavor, and why?
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough - I eat all the ice cream and then have a huge clump of cookie dough at the end. I'm weird.
Lastly, if you could go to into the future and tell yourself 1 thing, what would you say?
Hang out with friends when you're feeling stressed - laughter will always make you feel better!
There you have it, the genius behind one of my favorite candle brands. My personal favorite candle is Jazz Hands (formerly Blue), smells like a field of blueberries to me. I often put it on when I take a nice hot bath.
If you could have Lauren make a custom candle, what scent would you choose and why?
Maybe she'll creep and get some inspiration.
