Ellagee was one of the first brands I bought when I got introduced into the indie polish world. She had me with Jewel Encrusted. You know when you see something on your IG feed over and over again and keep debating following the trend? Yeah, that's exactly what happened and I'm so glad I purchased it.
With that said, I've only purchased that one and got gifted a mini of Burnished Skies. Once that polish comes back to stock, I'm buying it, because it is PERFECTION! I also had the Prince collection on my wishlist when it was re-listed.
But enough about me and my shopping problems, let's get to know Laura!
If someone was to make a purchase from your shop, what's your #1 recommendation?
That changes all the time cause I'm fickle, but right now I'd say to grab Vacation! It's a jaw dropping holo in a nice medium toned nude shade that flatters all skin tones. You might want some driving gloves though cause it's hypnotizing in the sun.
How the hell did you come up with the magicalness, that is Jewel Encrusted?
Haha! Jewel Encrusted was my top seller within a day of being released and is still going strong after all this time! When I made it I had just been looking at my gemstone glitters, which are made from its same formula in monochromatic jewel tones, and had a hmmm thought, what if I made one to tie them all together? So I took one glitter from each of them and put them in a silver/gold holo microglitter base and there she was!
As a nail polish maker, do you find yourself buying polishes from other brands?
Oh man, yes! I admire so many brand's unique and creative polishes. When I see a drugstore polish I like I often will just make it for myself, but when I see an indie I like I'm snapping it up just like any polish lover. I especially love the creativity in the polishes made by Raph of Digital Nails, who also happens to be my polish bestie!
What is your favorite part of making polishes and your least favorite part?
My favorite part is creating new polishes. I can sit in my office all day and completely lose track of time playing with all the different pigments and micas and glitters. My shelf of testers is overflowing.
My least favorite part is labeling the bottles. I always manage to get bubbles under the adhesive or fingerprints on the back. Someday maybe I'll spring for screen printed bottles but for now I'm still doing each one by hand.
How did you decide to grow with the company and create blankets, phone cases and even key chains?
The polish bottle key chains just kind of came to me one day. My first thought was to attach a mini bottle of actual polish to a key chain but it only took a hot minute to realize what a mess that could make in a purse, so I started working on the dried polish method. I get comments on them every time anyone sees mine, they're so much fun!
For the printed items, at first I made the 'My Favorite Color is Glitter' design for a bumper sticker for myself by taking photos of glitter and putting them into a little line drawing I did of my bottle. Then when I got it all done and went to order it I realized how many other things I could print it on and kind of lost all control! Since then I've created several more designs of my own and have also used some purchased artwork. I have some really adorable new designs coming in the next month or so, it's kind of addicting!
How important is it to you that your products and products you purchase, are cruelty free?
Very important! I know that most if not all cosmetic ingredients have been tested on animals in the past at some point, but there's been so much effort to get away from that and so much success in producing products without animal testing, I don't understand why any company would still do it. It's just cruel.
I see you're a huge Disney person, what is your favorite Disney movie?
Oh yikes, that's a hard question. It changes all the time actually, my favorite of the old classics is probably Fantasia, but I also adore the ones that featured empowered women like The Princess and the Frog and Brave. I think The Emperor's New Groove is the funniest and The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most artistically beautiful. I deeply identify with Baymax, he's probably my favorite character. I feel head over heels for Baby Dory last week though, so yeah, hard question lol
If you could be 1 Disney character, who would it be?
I'd love to be Jessie from Toy Story. I love her endless energy and enthusiasm and her loyalty.
Why do you think people appreciate and flock to the indie world?
I think people appreciate the hand crafted aspect of it. It's nice to think of something you use being made by an artisan instead of mass produced in a factory. People also like to support small businesses run by people who love the same things they love. It's not just somebody making nail polish for money, it's someone who truly loves nail polish and is pouring that into every creation. That's why I love it anyway!
What sets you apart from other shops?
Oooo tricky! I can't say others don't do this also, but one thing I try my hardest to do well is provide excellent customer service. I enjoy chatting with customers and I want to do everything I can to make every one of them thrilled with their purchase. I hope that stands out to people, it's really important to me.
Also a benefit of not being as big as some other brands is that I have time to do a lot of individual and group customs, which are just so much fun for me! I love making something from someone else's vision.
Let's end this with a serious question, what would be your last meal choice?
There's a restaurant at Epcot called Nine Dragons, their honey chicken is so amazing I forgot what was happening around me every time I took a bite. Plus I'd have a side order of macaroni and cheese from the food court at the Disney Pop Century hotel and a nice piece of bacon pizza from a place called Imo's in St. Louis. After that I'd go to a place in the Magic Kingdom for a funnel cake with powdered sugar.
Laura will be re-stocking Burnished Skies some time soon, but it is a FB group custom, so you must be a part of the FB group (linked). Laura was also kind enough to supply a coupon code for you all, mgandarinho will get you 10% off for the next 2 weeks.
If you end up buying something, let me know what you got.
And if you already own Ellagee polishes, tell me what your favorites are?!
