I've always thought it'd be cool to meet the makers behind certain Etsy and indie brands/shops, and since becoming a prime customer with certain shops, I thought I'd reach out to some of the owners.
I'd like to introduce you to the first 'Meet The Maker' guest, Stefanie Sanders of Supernatural Lacquer. If you follow my nail polish IG account, you know I'm a HUGE fan of Supernatural Lacquer, and rave about the polishes. I thought it was only fitting that Stefanie would be my first guest, and she agreed and answered some questions.
Tell me a bit about yourself, and one thing no one would guess from following you and your shop.
Well, I'm a 29 year old married momma of one from Southern Ohio. I love tattoos, food, Sci-Fi movies and cats. I think maybe one thing people probably don't know is that I'm also a full time licensed professional counselor for a women's substance abuse recovery facility. Polish is my side gig!
On a scale of 1 to 10, how obsessed are you with the show Supernatural? What encouraged you to name the shop after the show?
Definitely a 10! If I'm not dropping some SPN related pun or reference at least a few times a day my husband knows to check my pulse. The shop isn't actually *named* for the show Supernatural, contrary to popular belief, but it has been a source of inspiration from early on due to its vast mythology and monster related content. I didn't even put out a Supernatural themed set until about 6 months after I opened, but then I just ran with it afterward because I got such a great response! The line got blurred there for a bit with that, but I think I've achieved a good balance now. I chose the name Supernatural Lacquer because I wanted to start creating other-wordly and unique shades that reflected my lifelong love of mythology, urban legends and other mythical things! When my friend drew my logo with the wings, it all came together. That's still my #1 fandom in my collections, however, and probably always will be. My fan group is even called Polish Idjits, if that tells you anything!
When you first started, what plans did you have for your polishes? Do you feel you've obtained that?
I really didn't have a set plan, honestly. I opened shop with a "let's see where this goes" outlook and never expected it to grow to where it is now!
Do you ever look back at your old polishes and think about bringing them back for new followers? (cough cough Demon Blood Junkie cough cough)
I definitely have a few that I miss, that one included. Maybe some day we'll have a reunion! ;)
Are you team Dean or Sam? Cas or Crowley?
I'm a Dean girl for life.
What indie shops are your favorites?
Right now I'm obsessed with Aroma Rebel soap, Lolita Lacquer mani bombs, Scofflaw Nail Varnish and Mordaunt's Coffin Gems!
What is your favorite polish you've ever made and why?
It's a tie between my recent birthday shade, IV.XX and Descent from Heaven. When I made IV.XX, I made my dream polish and poured everything I love about color and nail polish into it. Blurple. Copper. Color shift flakies. Squishy goodness. Ugh, yes! Descent from Heaven was a custom turned core color and it's uniqueness and depth gets me every time I see a swatch! I also love that the idea was fan made.
What started your nail polish obsession?
In 2012 I was diagnosed with a chronic illness and spent a lot of time at home off work while we worked on getting it under control. I turned to Instagram and Reddit out of boredom and found the nail polish groups. Shortly thereafter I figured out indie polish was a thing and immediately fell down the rabbit hole!
Lastly, where do you see your shop and polishes in a year?
Hopefully still moving along, doing their thing. I have a list the length of my arm of ideas! I don't think I'll ever make polish full time, but see it being a very significant part of my life for a good long while.
If you have any other questions for Stefanie, ask them below, and maybe she'll answer them!
Also - feel free to suggest Etsy and indie makers you'd like to have partake in this series.
